Ralph Lauren- Heritage Look: A Timeless American Story

Alexi Lubomirski

“I discovered this heritage of a timeless America, uncontrived, free-form and free-spirited, natural and from the earth, and it touched me and became the living part of all that I design.” -Ralph Lauren

Before we get you these tips lets discuss Ralph lauren’s history. The Ralph Lauren aesthetic is a design style centered around one enduring theme: the heritage of a timeless America. There are countless ways to express a love for America, but Ralph Lauren honed his focus on free-form, free-spirited elements that became the living language of his design philosophy.

Over the years, we have come to recognize and love the equestrian influences, American frontier spirit, rustic landscapes, and traditional craftsmanship that appear throughout Ralph Lauren’s fashion and home collections. His designs create a visual story that feels distinctly American while remaining sophisticated and enduring.

Rustic Charm Meets Classic Tradition

The Ralph Lauren recipe is essentially rustic charm meeting classic tradition. This philosophy has helped shape the American fashion and lifestyle landscape since the late 1960s, evolving beyond clothing into a complete vision of how an American home and lifestyle can look and feel.

Part of what makes the aesthetic so timeless is that it doesn’t rely on fleeting trends. Instead, Ralph Lauren’s designs feel like statements—pieces that can move effortlessly between decorating styles while still commanding attention.

Think of the familiar elements: traditional plaid, equestrian motifs, feathers, silverware, crystal and colored glassware, leather, rich wood, and even something as simple as a cable-knit sweater. These are not merely decorative objects; they have become recognizable staples of American style.

And perhaps that is the real beauty of the Heritage look: it doesn’t try to reinvent tradition—it makes tradition feel relevant again.

The Thanksgiving table look you already have at home

With this in mind, we all know Thanksgiving is just around the corner. One of my favorite ways to create a beautiful, character-filled Thanksgiving table is to go thrifting for similar pieces or pull out the fancy holiday dinnerware that has been tucked away in Grandma’s china cabinet. You don’t have to buy everything new to create a table that feels collected, intentional, and timeless.

First up: The Turkey Serving Platter

We’ve all seen them—the beautiful turkey serving platters that seem to magically appear at thrift stores, estate sales, and antique markets. This is the perfect place to start. A vintage platter instantly gives the table a sense of history and tradition, while becoming a conversation piece in its own right.

Designer Tip:- Use the thirfted item in your grandmas china cabinet.

Designer Theme: The Turkey plate is the show stopper.

Second on the list: Amber Glassware

Bring back the charm of 1970s amber glassware. Look for pieces in warm honey and cognac tones, including ribbed, fluted, pressed, or even hand-cut crystal designs. The beauty of amber glass is the warmth it brings to the table, especially when paired with candlelight and rich wood tones.

Designer Tip: Use Amber Glassware in multipe colors to add interest to your tablescapes.

Third: Patterned Napkins or Traditional Plaid

Don’t underestimate the power of a great napkin. Choose a bold, traditional pattern or keep things classic with plaid. You really can’t go wrong with plaid—it works beautifully across a variety of decorating styles and comes in countless color combinations. Whether you choose deep burgundy, forest green, navy, brown, or a combination of all four, plaid adds an instant layer of warmth, personality, and sophistication.

Designer Tip: Use your collection of plaid or floral napkins at the Thanksgiving table this year.

Designer Theme: A touch of traditional plaid.

And Fourth: Add a Little Personality

This last idea is completely optional, but if you want to give your table a little more character, look for an animal figurine that has some personal meaning to you. A horse, bird, deer, bee, in brass or nickel finish can become a charming detail when tucked into the centerpiece.

Designer Tip: Find a family heirloom, trinket, or figurine that holds special meaning to you.

Think of your floral arrangement as the hero of the table, and let these smaller objects surround it rather than compete with it. The result should feel collected over time—not overly coordinated.

The best part, you can mix, match, thrift, borrow, and repurpose. That is what makes a heritage-inspired Thanksgiving table feel so special: it tells a story through the things you already love.

The Ralph Lauren Heritage Look for the bedroom

These next few inspirational ideas are for the decor enthusiasts who love to carry a theme throughout the home and bring the holiday festivities beyond the dining room and into the living room and bedroom.

Using the same Ralph Lauren Heritage look- recipe we explored above, you can subtly continue the story throughout your home. Think of tartan plaid appearing in curtains, throw pillows, blankets, or bedding, while richer colors, vintage-inspired pieces, and seasonal greenery reinforce the overall mood.

The Heritage Holiday Recipe

The inspiration below leans toward the maximalist side, but it beautifully incorporates many of the elements we explored for the Thanksgiving tablescape. The result is a home that feels layered, collected, warm, and unmistakably festive without feeling overly coordinated.

  • Family heirloom or meaningful figurine — Add pieces that tell a personal story.
  • Tartan plaid — Introduce plaid through curtains, bedding, throws, or accent pillows.
  • Moody color palette — Layer deep greens, burgundy, brown, amber, and warm neutrals.
  • Floral arrangements — Bring in seasonal branches, dried florals, hydrangeas, and rich autumnal blooms.
  • Heritage-inspired artwork — Incorporate equestrian, pastoral, botanical, or traditional American imagery.
  • Ambient lighting — Use table lamps, sconces, candles, and warm decorative lighting to create an intimate glow.
  • Architectural details — Let millwork, fireplaces, wood paneling, traditional moldings, and other architectural features become part of the design.

The goal isn’t to duplicate the Thanksgiving table in every room—it’s to let the same story unfold throughout the home.
